Last Sunday we were invited down to the new Thaikhun restaurant in the intu Victoria Centre in Nottingham. Thaikhun is one of the six restaurants that have opened around intu Victoria Centre’s iconic Clocktower with more still to come during 2016 as the Clocktower opens.
We wouldn’t normally visit a Thai restaurant with the kids as they can be quite funny about their food at times, so we have normally opted for the easiest way out and gone with something we know they will love. I kind of hate myself for that attitude because when we opt for the easiest option we limit them and stop them experiencing new tastes and new experiences. So I have given myself a really strong talking to about this after our wonderful visit to Thaikhun and in future we will be much more experimental when it comes to dining out with the kids.

Boo was excited by the menu and loved the colouring in.
Both kids were very excited to be trying out a new restaurant and they just loved how Thaikhun was so different to anywhere they have eaten before… it really is just like a street in Bangkok with all the wonderful decor. The kids were so hungry when we went so we made sure that their main courses would come with our starters because we all know what hungry children can be like 😉

Bugs enjoying his lemonade.
Bugs was pretty grumpy on arrival but as soon as he has a nice big gulp of lemonade and some Thai crackers he settled down to colour in his menu. There are just four items on the kids menu and we ordered three of them to make sure they would find something that they liked. We really need not have worried about that though as they enjoyed every dish and they had demolished one dish before I even got to take a photo! 🙂

Thai Prawn Crackers
You can’t eat at a Thai without having a bowl of Prawn Crackers can you? They were perfect with the Sweet Chilli Sauce!

Phad Thai Dek
The kids meals were served on adorable plastic piggy plates. The Phad Thai Dek was absolutely gorgeous, they also tried Khao Moo Deng which was their absolute favourite, of course that was the one I didn’t get a photo of but it is BBQ pork slices served on a bed of steamed rice, with sweet BBQ sauce and it is (I can confirm) divine! I wish I’d chosen it for myself 😉

Bangkok Pop Corn Chicken
I think a few pieces of the chicken had been snaffled when I took this picture… I did say the kids were starving and grumpy didn’t I 😉

Happily tucking into their meal.
As you can see they are really enjoying their meal, they both loved the sweet chilli sauce which really surprised me.

Sukumvit 38 Platter for two people
For our started we opted for Sukumvit 38 Platter which consisted of salt and pepper squid, fish cakes, chicken spring rolls and honey pork, as you can see above the presentation was spot on and it was really tasty.

Pinto Siam for Two People
For our main course we went for another sharing dish… the Pinto Siam. This consisted of chicken massaman curry, stir fried pork belly in red curry sauce, beef in oyster sauce and egg fried rice. Everything was cooked to perfection. the massaman was our favourite but we loved the other two as well! I could just go back and eat it all again right now in fact!

Chocolate Fudge Cake
After the mains we were all rather stuffed but we couldn’t leave without trying the desserts. So we ordered three different ones to share between us all. In first place was the chocolate fudge cake! It was gooey, chocolatey, moist… an absolute pleasure to eat!

Ice Cream
In second place was the chocolate and the coconut ice-cream. We all loved these, none of us had tried coconut ice-cream before and it is amazing! I think it is my most favourite flavour of ice-cream now. I have to find some as nice as this one was.

Pancake Sankaya
Being in a Thai restaurant we had to order one of their traditional desserts… Traditional Thai pancakes with pandan custard served with a dollop of ice cream. Unfortunately I was the only one to like these though, but the kids and my other half did give them a good try. My other half doesn’t like custard so I think that was his problem but I think with the kids it was just because they weren’t the pancakes they are used to. Anyway I thought they were yum!
We loved our visit to Thaikhun, the kids were really intrigued by everything on display and asked so many questions about Thailand so it was like a lesson as well as a family meal 🙂
The staff and service were brilliant through our meal, we really couldn’t have asked for better!! A really really delicious meal in lovely surroundings! We will be visiting again 🙂
Have you ever eaten at Thaikhun?

Good Thai food is amazing. It’s such a clean fresh heat. My girls have tried a few dishes but find a lot of thai dishes too hot. But they are definitely getting more adventurous as they get older so we will keep on getting them to taste 🙂
I adore Thai food but like you, I’d think twice about taking the children there. Silly really , as it’s the best way for them to learn about new taste experiences. This place looks great – I’d definitely pop by the next time I’m in Nottingham.
The food does look good. We often find that H will surprise us with his choices if we go somewhere different.
Sounds like a great family evening out and the food looks amazing! Hope they will open a shop in Belfast!xx
Gosh, it all looks so good. yes I need to help my kids be more adventurous too. Mich x
Your food looks amazing and it’s good they have some nice children’s meals too. My children are not adventurous with food at home but they do tend to try more when we are out. My Little Man absolutely loved a trip to Wagamamas, but I’ve yet persuaded them to try sushi which is one of my all time favourites.
Oh yum. My boys are both pretty adventurous when it comes to food, so they love visiting different restaurants.
I have never tried Thai food – must change this as it looks lovely
Oh this looks and sounds delicious. I haven’t eaten out in Nottingham for years!
That food looks amazing – I don’t think we have any Thai restaurants near us which is a shame x
I love Thai food, but it’s a little hard to find here. That all sounds delicious!
I love Thai food and this looks amazing Sis x
