Ridgeback Dimension 20 Review

I arrived home last week to find the biggest box I had ever seen in my hallway… However it wasn’t the box which was the surprise, it was the fantastic product inside! Bugs had just finished learning to ride on a second hand bike, which is now far too small and was ready for an upgrade. So when Ridgeback Bikes got in touch to see if Bugs would like a bike to review it could not have come at a more perfect time!

Bugs was sent a Ridgeback Dimension 20 which costs £289.99 over on the website. It is described as ‘the original premium kids bike’ and is ideal for younger riders who cycle more frequently. All the principles of a Metro series hybrid with a specification and features designed specifically for smaller riders.

So how good is the bike? Well the truth is I am jealous, seriously jealous. I have a broken bike and an old bike on it last legs. So when my son received this beautiful machine I truly wished that I was 6 again.

The bike has a slender low profile similar to a BMX frame. However, unlike a true BMX made for tricks, this is much more of a hybrid designed for a young person to feel cool and learn how to ride any bike. The groupset is Shimano… ie the gears, pedals and brakes, top class. The gears are controlled by a twist grip mechanism on the right handle and change smoothly, rapidly and make learning how to manage gear changing for a child as easy as it can be.

It is easy to push-off for small young legs, it is easy to control and it’s frame is light enough and agile enough to enable him to zip at speed…and then the brakes: sharp, taught, mountain bike style quick release calipers. For storage and carriage the wheels are also quick release. There is no down side here. None what so ever!

Regardless of functionality it is a beautiful thing, cool, attractive and it gives Bugs his first real taste of freedom and makes him happy and if a bike does all those things it’s a success. Isn’t it? Amazing!

Bugs has been riding his new bike every single day since he got it, he found the transition from his old bike to this one incredibly easy, in fact I think he has become a really confident rider since starting to ride this. We are very very happy with this bike, it is absolute quality and can highly recommend it to you 🙂

* Bugs was gifted this bike free of charge for the purpose of our review. He absolutely LOVES his new bike and I am sure he is going to have a few awesome years with it!

May I ask how easy it was to put together please? Or did it come fully built and ready to ride?

Such a lovely looking bike! And sounds like it’s really good quality too. I think we’ll try and tackle bike riding this year with my 6 year old son, he’s not shown that much interest before now but a lot of his friends now ride their bikes in the park and I think he’d like to be able to do it too. x

Isaac needs a new bike, he got on his the other day and we realised it is way too small for him now. He got some money for his birthday so we are going out to look at the weekend. This looks fab but I am not sure our budget will stretch quite this far sadly 🙁 – need to get a trail gator for mine though so we can all go out together

Look how happy he is and I can see why, what a brilliant bike. Perfect for little learners, I’m going to see if they have this for youngest daughter as she is desperate to be like her big sister x

Oh this looks amazing, I’m looking for something like this for my little girl at the moment, hers is too small and too heavy. I’m off to see if they do it in her size, might be the perfect birthday present!

That looks amazing! It’s great that he’s enjoying it so much and he made the transition so easily. No wonder you are jealous of him, you can’t beat a new bike!
My poor boys haven’t had a new bike for YEARS. They’re 15 and 13 now and I think the last new bike was when my eldest was 10! They just borrow my husband’s bike now!
