New Business Mums – Nicky, Fiamma and Gemma

Mum in Business

Please welcome Nicky, Fiamma & Gemma to my blog this morning. They are here to tell us about their new business venture Scout & Co! Have you checked out the gorgeous  Scout & Co yet? No? Well why not.. I promise you it is beautiful and you won’t want to leave empty handed! If that is the case then please help yourself to  10% off all orders until 31st December with code THISMUMMY 🙂

Who are you?
Nicky, Fiamma and Gemma. We’re three good friends with four kids between us (Wolfe, 4, Viggo, 2, Anna, 17 months, Hella, 4 months) – and another due any day now! We live in Stoke Newington, London. We have day jobs: Gemma is a retail buyer on maternity leave (Sainsbury’s, Tobar, Woolworths), Fiamma ran her own fashion label and has a vintage clothing business and Nicky works in magazine/website editorial (ASOS, Elle, The Outnet).

What do you do?
Scout & Co is our new online kids’ lifestyle boutique selling beautiful, design-led products that both children and adults will love. We stock brilliant gifts, stylish décor, creative toys and cool, unisex clothing and accessories for under fives, from designer/makers in Britain, Scandinavia and the US, plus we have our own exclusive range of prints, cards and soon, T-shirts too. We’re all about design for kids you love.

When did you establish your business?
We launched in October so we’re brand new! We’d been talking about starting a business off and on for years, but decided to properly do it in July. So it’s been very quick since then!

What made you start your own business?
A few things really – wanting to do something for ourselves, wanting to do something together and also just wanting to give it a go and not having that “what if / if only” feeling! As to why Scout & Co, as we’re all mamas, we’re pretty fed up with the mountain of plastic toys piling up in our homes, and those stereotypical pastel pink and blue children’s clothes and products you see everywhere. Just because something is for kids doesn’t mean it can’t be well designed, long-lasting, but still playful and fun. We want our products to make you smile. We think of it as toys you don’t mind lying around your home (less tidying up!) and décor that looks just as good in your living room as in the kids’ rooms.

What do you love about working for yourself?
Making your own decisions, only buying stock that we really love, discovering new designers, sharing the little successes with the others, learning so much along the way… It’s hard work, but really rewarding. On a personal note, it’s been really brilliant working together and having the perfect excuse to hang out with excellent friends as much as possible!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
Free time is a thing of the past! It’s tough fitting a new business around childcare / day jobs. Also, knowing when to switch off the laptop. Gemma says she thinks Hella might grow up to find the tapping of fingers on a keyboard is her favourite comforting white noise!

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
Not really – it’s been a big learning curve so any little mistakes that we’ve made on the way will help us in the future (hopefully). In hindsight, we might have given ourselves a bit longer to launch a business, but we’re on a roll now!

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Do it! It’s brilliantly exciting (if nerve-wracking at times). Mums are natural multi-taskers so we’re used to fitting in to whatever time we’ve got ‘spare’. You’ll be surprised what work you can fit into toddler nap times, night feeds, business meetings held by the swings in the playground, brainwaves while brushing teeth, etc.  Also, start a business with friends: it’s going to seep into your whole life, so you might as well have fun at the same time!

If like me; you can’t get enough of these ladies head on over to their social media sites…
