New business Mum Kathryn Quaid is on the blog today to tell us about herself and her new business! 🙂
Who are you?
Kathryn Quaid – mum to Emily (and baby number 2 due in May!), wife to James and owner of Pitterpac Ltd.
What do you do?
I am lucky enough to design and establish my own brand of luxury, fashion forward leather changing bags available on www.pitterpac.com
When did you establish your business?
Pitterpac was officially launched at The Baby Show, Earls Court in October 2012. The designs and ideas were in creation from 2011.
What made you start your own business?
The idea for Pitterpac came about after the birth of Emily in 2010. As a previous lover of designer, high fashion handbags I was dismayed by the uninspiring designs offered in changing bags. I am a real magpie for colour and hunted high and low for a top quality, leather changing bag that was in line with catwalk trends and offered the practicality needed from a nappy bag. After failing in my hunt, I started to design my first bag – The Whitehall With a lot of inspiration and guidance from my husband who also runs his own business and encouragement from my parents, I decided to create a range and turn it into a new career.
What do you love about working for yourself?
I love the freedom and satisfaction of running my own business. Seeing my designs on the catwalk and being loved by customers is a real thrill. I also am very grateful that I can adapt my working hours to suit our family, allowing me to spend precious time with my daughter whilst she is still young.
Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
At this point, I can honestly say that there isn’t anything I dislike.
Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
I would have had the courage to leave the security of my teaching job to pursue my dream of running my own business sooner. However, I would not have had the idea for Pitterpac bags had it not been for the birth of Emily so it’s easier said than done!
What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Running a business can be a tiring and full on experience. It’s important to make sure your business is centred around a passion so work doesn’t feel like a chore during the busier periods. Also have confidence in yourself to do it, as with a lot of hard work and support from friends and family anything is possible!
