Many of you know that for the past 5 years I have had a Mums in business section on the blog, I love to support other Mums like myself but I also know how hard it is for anyone to start up a new business, to build something from scratch and get the word out. So today I am creating a new business section too for anyone who’d like to tell us about their new business venture.
Today I would like to introduce you to Sally who is here to tell you all about herself and her very new business…
Hi, I’m Sally Oddy, a mum-in-waiting from Yorkshire! I’m 40 years old and have just started IVF in the hopes of becoming a mum. We started trying a year ago and, at that time, I was mulling over setting up a blog to record my ttc story. As I developed the blog idea it grew and, after talking to a lot of mum friends, I decided that I wanted to focus on helping mums make friends and create support networks to help them through all stages of being a mum. This is how www.meetothermums.com was born.
I’ve had a tough year, with my Mum being diagnosed with cancer last summer and passing away this January so all thoughts of a new business venture were put on hold. When I surfaced in February I decided I needed a focus so, since then, all my energy has been put into Meet Other Mums. Alongside that I am a marketing consultant so provide freelance marketing support to a wide variety of businesses across Yorkshire.
Meet Other Mums is unique because it actually matches you with mums based on your profile criteria. This takes the stress and hassle out of trying to make new mum friends. Membership is totally free and you can also create private groups, social events and chat in the forums.
Meet Other Mums finally launched at the beginning of August and I’m really excited with how it is building, more members are joining every day and after only one week a Member let me know she’d had 12 matches!
I have big plans for the site and will shortly be adding a Guest Blog section and inviting all the lovely mummy bloggers I meet on Twitter and FaceBook to link their blogs to the site. I will also be adding a kind of jobs board where mums can advertise services they need so that mums can find flexible jobs that make use of their existing skills and fit around their schedules.
Having escaped the corporate world to set up on my own three years ago I love working for myself and the flexibility it allows. Meet Other Mums will hopefully provide event more flexibility so that if we are lucky enough to have a baby I can devote more time to learning how to be a mum and taking the time to enjoy the ride.
I would advise anyone who has a marketable skill or idea that can practically be applied by yourself for yourself to set up their own business. My advice would be to do your research, take the time to hone your idea, get an accurate list of costs, be patient, persistent and, above all, have confidence in yourself!
Mums can join for free at www.meetothermums.com.

What a fabulous idea for a business. It can be so isolating sometimes being a mum and hard to meet others.

Great advice there in the last paragraph… It’s important to believe in ourselves and support each other.
