Who are you?

Victoria Imogen Casebourne

What do you do?
Managing Director of The Keepsake Co

When did you establish your business?
2002

What made you start your own business?
I wanted the creative freedom that only running your own business can give you. I felt stifled and frustrated at work and knew I had more to offer.

What do you love about working for yourself?
The flexibility and freedom to follow your heart, the fact you love what you do and that you are doing it all for yourself!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
Being the one ultimately responsible for paying the bills and it can be a little lonely at times.

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
I would take more time at the start to think about the sort of business I wanted to create, really look at WHY I was doing what I was doing and what I wanted the end result to look like before jumping in. Without a clear picture of what the end ‘success’ looks like you will never know when you have achieved it and you will end up too busy working in your business to ever ask yourself that question again.

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Treat your business as a tool to create your perfect life which working 9-5 will never be able to give you. Don’t fall into the trap of creating a business which ultimately has all the traits of a 9-5 job (long hours, restrictions but with more headaches!). Get it right at the beginning. Choose something you love doing and make sure you have all the bits you don’t like doing covered by someone else or at least have a plan in place of how you will outsource those things after you start making money. Keep it simple and enjoy every moment of building your dream life!
