Who are you?
I am a 31 yr old married northern mum of 2 young boys (2 and 4) living down south.

What do you do?
I’ve opened an online business from home that I can work around looking after my children selling funky bags, sleeves and cases for iPhones, laptops, Kindles, iPads and netbooks for women

When did you establish your business?
In June 2011

What made you start your own business?
I was desperate to start using my brain again after taking 4 yrs off to look after my children, but I wanted to do something that I could fit around them, the idea came about just after the Royal Wedding as I read a story about Carol Middleton setting up her own business Party Pieces when she was pregnant with her third child.  I thought, if she can do it so can I. I started thinking about what sort of products I could sell and thought back to when I worked for a corporation before the children and they handed out big, bulk black bags with their laptops.  They were difficult to carry and not targeted towards women at all.  There are now, more and more women carrying around mobile devices that need protecting but in a stylish way. This is how Rightbag came about.

What do you love about working for yourself?
I love how if one of the boys are ill I don’t have to sort out any childcare, the dog gets company during the day and if I’m a bit quiet I can get some of my housework done!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
It can be very difficult when on a phone to a client or supplier and I have children swinging round my legs demanding something to eat and drink.  I can’t get to sleep some nights due to me making a list in my head what I have to do the next day and worrying if I have done the right thing or set the right budget.

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?

Not really, there are things that I would have added to the website originally that I know now but I only know about them from customer feedback and ideas that have developed as the site progressed.  It’s been amazing how much I have learnt so far about the industry, about web design, about what customers are looking for. It has all shaped Rightbag into what it is today and I’m incredibly proud of the site we have.
What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?

Set a budget and stick to it, research where you can get your products from, ask for a better deal (most of the time they will knock something off for you making your profits higher – very important for a new business) go with your gut instinct and enjoy the ride!
