Mumpreneur Feature – Nicky

Mum in Business

The lovely Nicky from Jumping Juniper is here on the blog this morning to tell us about herself and her business – Check out the beautiful clothes on her website that she sews herself :O)

Who are you?
I am Nicky Thomas-Davies, mother of 3 girls (12,6 and 4) and wife to musician and luthier, Jerome. I live in a tiny village called Sissinghurst, in Kent

What do you do?
I sew clothes for children and soon for adults.

When did you establish your business?
I’ve been sewing for a couple of years but decided to make it official this year.

What made you start your own business?
I was getting interest from other mums about what my girls were dressed in. I took a chance and booked a stall at the Wilderness Festival and there was lots of interest and sales.  I’ve always worked for a living and having ‘time off’ after moving to the country just felt odd. This keeps my fingers busy!
What do you love about working for yourself?
I can fit it around the family
Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
I’m easily distracted. I need to get my head around the fact that this stuff wont get sold if i don’t sew it… and get off Twitter!!

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
Have a bit more confidence in myself and what I’m making. It’s good stuff and i should charge what its worth.

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?

Don’t wait for the exact right moment. It will never come. If you have a good idea and the time to carry it out – just do it. If you start small, you can expand when you have more time.
