Mumpreneur Feature – Kim

Mum in Business

The lovely Kim from Planet Tots is our Mumpreneur feature on the blog today. Please say hi and see the end of the post for a FAB discount code for her gorgeous site!

Who are you?
I am Kim McCann, mother to Alastair 2 and Alexa 8 months.

What do you do?
I run Planet Tots. We help parents build a bright future by providing information, products and services that help look after the Planet or support child development. We cover Feeding, Caring and Learning to address all areas of concern to parents. We have directories of activity classes for little ones, ideas of free things to do at home to help them learn; quick, tasty and healthy family recipes; breast feeding support and ecological kids products. We believe that to truly appeal to all parents ecological products need to have all the same benefits as their normal counterparts with their Eco and ethical credentials as an added bonus. We only choose products of the highest quality and design. We have started with kids clothing and skin care but aim to grow into a true one stop shop for all your parenting needs.

When did you establish your business?
We started trading our Ecological kids ranges at markets in November 2010 with the website being launched in February 2011.

What made you start your own business?
I’d always wanted to work for myself but never had the right idea. When I had Alastair I was preoccupied with how to maximise his potential and look after the Planet he would inherit. The green choice wasn’t always as easy or as accessible as I would have liked. I realised that everything I worried about could be covered in 3 broad topics; Feeding, Learning and Caring. I thought “wouldn’t it be great if you could have a single resource to help with all these aspects in one place and make the ecological choices more accessible to all” and so Planet Tots was born!

What do you love about working for yourself?
Being truly in control of how I spread my time between family and work. I love building something from nothing, every sale or new twitter follower or new FB like gives me a sense of achievement!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
I’m accountable to no one but myself, but I’m a very tough boss! I constantly have the feeling that I should be doing something for the business and my to do list is always 3 pages long. I set myself very challenging targets but if I don’t achieve them no one knows but me :o)

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
Don’t let the paperwork get on top of you! I concentrate on all the customer facing stuff and my office is a mess. I keep meaning to get on top of it but not managed it yet! I would say I was totally unrealistic on how much work would be involved and how much time it would take to get things up and running.

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Research, research, research and use what you find in that to help shape your business plan. I spent almost a full year developing and evolving Planet Tots and developing the associated growth plans before I launched. I’m glad I did because I think I avoided a lot of common pitfalls by doing so. I’m confident that my product and business is right for the market, I just need to spend the time growing exposure and building brand awareness now.
