Mumpreneur Feature – Kari

Mum in Business

The lovely Kari from myCinnamonGirl is on the blog today – we recently reviewed some of her clothes here and we absolutely LOVE them and I am sure you all will too!

Who are you?

My name is Kari Thomassen, I am 36, from Norway,  I  live with my husband and two sons in Dubai, UAE.
What do you do?
I am the designer  and co-owner of the brand: myCinnamonGirl. I design the collections for myCinnamonGirl, children and woman clothes.

When did you establish your business?

It was established I 2008, but I started working on the concept in 2005.
What made you start your own business?
I have always had a passion for designing and sewing clothes, especially children’s clothes, and it was always my ambition to one day be able to work with what I love full time.
What do you love about working for yourself?
I love the freedom, I have great satisfaction in seeing my products develop from an  idea that I have , from start to finish.
Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
It would have to be that you end up working too much.. all though that you have to do to if you want to get where you want. And it is very easy to spend more time working when it is for yourself, so you end up a bit unsocial…
Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
As you get more experience, and look back at your work, there is always many things you could have done differently, but I think it is good to learn from your “mistakes” , and I believe that makes you stronger.
What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?

If you are burning for something, I say try your best to make it possible. Use your network,  establish contacts, research, start small, and gradually grow. Don’t be too “greedy” in the beginning, thinking you going to make lots of money quickly, it will take time, but if you believe in your product/idea or concept, you can make it. Be patient, and willing to give it a lot of your time.

As a mum starting your own business can be challenging, because it is busy days. Plan your day ahead, use your time when the kids are in school/ day-care, or sleeping, work when you have peace and the chance to focus on what you are doing
