Mumpreneur Feature – Isa Maria

Mum in Business

Isa Marie from Noisette Illustration is with us this morning – please say a big hello 🙂

Who are you?

Hi! My name’s Isa Maria and I’m Mum to two little ones, Joseph 2 and Lily 12 weeks.

What do you do?

I’m a graphic designer and illustrator specialising in children’s illustrations. I run Noisette Illustration a design and paper goods studio and have an online shop Noisette, selling happy paper goods for children.

When did you establish your business?

I launched the Noisette shop in October 2010 but I’ve been offering graphic design services since November 2009.

What made you start your own business?

I was made redundant the week I was due back from maternity leave with my son and it gave me the push I needed to start a business that would allow me to stay home with the kids. I hated the thought of having to go back to an office job so I put everything into launching my design business. I started with graphic design and marketing for creative businesses then moved on to children’s illustrations after entering a contest to design a banner for a popular children’s design blog. I didn’t win but the response to my entry was fantastic and it gave me the confidence to start working on my own line of illustrated paper goods.

What do you love about working for yourself?
I love being home with my children. It’s why I do this. I get to hang out, play with trains, paint and lego all day, then when they are in bed I get to draw happy little creatures inspired by our day. My children are such an important part of my business and just by being with them and experiencing their laugher inspires me to create. The first collection, ‘Happy Woodland’ is inspired by our nature walks and the little friends we meet along the way. I love that my son in particular, without knowing it has had a hand in creating this line just by being his inquisitive and happy two year old self..

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?

I would have started sooner. Looking back, I was always meant to be a children’s designer and illustrator. I studied design at university and I used to sell illustrations of cartoons to my friends when I was a child (aged 8!) but I was advised to get a ‘proper’ job and went the corporate route. I’m a big kid at heart and always identified with children’s products and it’s only now through starting Noisette Illustration that I am following my dream.

Finally If there is 1 thing that you could tell other Mums who want to start their own business; what would it be?
Just go for it! Try not to worry about what other people think. Life is short, so spend it doing something you love.
