Mumpreneur Feature – Emma & Becky

Mum in Business

The lovely Emma & Becky from Baby Loves Organic are on the blog this morning to tell us about themselves and their business :O)

Who are you?
We’re two Mum’s – Emma and Becky. Emma’s son was born prematurely and because of this used organic products and clothing in the early stages of her son’s life. Finding it hard to find some of the products online, we asked our Internet geek husband’s to build us a website and we set about sourcing products that we believed in to stock.

What do you do?

Emma – I’m a practising lawyer. I work in commercial property law and find it both challenging and good fun (yes, I’m that sad!).
Becky – I’m a teaching assistant: I work mostly with 8-10 year olds, helping them to learn and develop  a sense of independence which they can take with them throughout their education. Some aspects of the job are quite similar to being a parent, hard work but rewarding and lots of fun! Working during time on an evening, weekends and snatched time during the day means starting BabyLoves has been hard work!

When did you establish your business?
2011 – the idea was born in 2010 but it took us a while to get suppliers sorted, the bank, the website built and all the other things you didn’t know you need (we forgot to sort out an accountant until the last minute – oops!).

What made you start your own business?
We wanted to see if we can could run an online store successfully – our husbands have worked in the retail sector for most of their career so we’ve heard lots about how things should be done. We decided to do it for ourselves! The initial idea was to open a “bricks and mortar” boutique store and we may still do so but only once we’re happy with the online store first.

What do you love about working for yourself?
We get to make the decisions! Having sat and watched The Apprentice and Dragon’s Den and shouted at the tele at all the daft decisions being made, it’s now our turn and we’ve no Alan Sugar or Peter Jones to turn to for assistance. Scary but fun!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
Not at the moment! We’re working well together as a team and seeing orders come in after we’ve been talking to customers about the benefits of organic products is really fulfilling.

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
We’d give ourselves more patience! We got a little fed up with how long starting up can take and whilst it’s quick to open a webstore, getting people to it and doing things such as “Search Engine Optimisation” (we’re learning slowly!) takes a few weeks to get going. Quicker please!

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Do it. Whether you aim to be the next Mama and Papa’s or are happy running a small business (online or offline) it’s really rewarding seeing the end result. Our shop is another child in the family and like all children, it’s hard work but we love it! If in doubt, just go for it! If anyone wants to talk to us in particular, you can contact us via the website and we’ll be happy to answer any questions anyone has 🙂
