Mumpreneur Feature – Emily

Mum in Business

It’s been a while since I did a Mumpreneur feature over here; in fact I think this is the first since I changed to my new domain! Anyway please give a warm welcome to Emily from Piccolo Bambino! A  beautiful website selling gorgeous products for your little ones – Emily has very kindly offered you a fantastic 15% off with code BAMBINO15 🙂

Who are you?
Emily Surash, 31 year old Lancashire lass living in Newcastle.

What do you do?
I own and run Piccolo Bambino.  An online shop selling gorgeous modern gifts and toys that are unique, contemporary and yet have a vintage feel.

When did you establish your business?
November 2011

What made you start your own business?
As a mum of 2 small children I found that the working pattern of my old job was not conductive in looking after them and enjoying family time, so I decided to act on my love for all things baby! After a lot of hard work and enjoyable market research, Piccolo Bambino was born!

What do you love about working for yourself?
I love the flexibility of working for myself, I’m able to act on ideas without having to run them past anyone other than my husband!

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
I sometimes find it very lonely. My old job involved working in a large team so I’ve found it a huge difference only having myself to talk too!

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
I think I’m one of the lucky ones, as I don’t think I can say I would go back and change anything. My website was the hardest thing to get up and running it took a lot longer than predicted, however I wouldn’t have it looking any different. I love it.

What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Be prepared to put in the hours after 7pm at night. It’s a very long day looking after children and running a business. Set me time/family time away from the business so that it doesn’t take over. Be prepared to have phone calls with clients/wholesalers in the daytime with children hanging round your feet! Enjoy it!
