Mumpreneur Feature – Elizabeth Longworth

Mum in Business

This evening please welcome Lizzie from Chic Unique to my blog 🙂

Who are you?
My name is Elizabeth Longworth, im 27 yrs old and a full time mum to my 3 girls, elissa 6, emma 4 (who has prader-willi syndrome) and zoe 15 months. Ive been married to the girls dad , simon, for just turned 1 yr.

What do you do?
I design and make costume jewellery, making it inexpensive but unique, quirky and fun. I also do custom design orders and can offer wholesale upon request.

When did you establish your business?I started chic unique about 6 months ago, firstly
just as a hobby but after the first few items i made sold, i decided to take it that one step further and try to establish myself as a business.

What made you start your own business?
I wanted for myself to succeed at something more than just a ‘job’. my husband has worked flat out all his life and even though he has a career he didnt enjoy it and as the children have krept up in age i took the oppertunity to try and make something better for us as a family, something the children could get involved in,  that could eventually hopefully support us, and most importantly i wanted my girls to be proud of me and grow up knowing you can do anything you put your mind to.

What do you love about working for yourself?
I love the flexibilty of working for myself, knowing i can spend all my day time with the girls then once theyve gone to bed get stuck into my work and still have time to spend with my hubby, and seeing something start as nothing then materialise into something other people want to buy, that makes me feel proud! i still get a huge grin every time i sell something!

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
I think i would of planned properly first, researched some more and definately asked more people who where in the know. its been a bit of trial and error for me really but not completely in a bad way.

Finally If there is 1 thing that you could tell other Mums who want to start their own business; what would it be?
Dont think about it just go for it! if you have a talent for anything that you think others can benefit from or can appreciate then you owe it to yourself to offer it out there for others to see. theres no harm in trying and you only live once, life it to short for regrets!
