Mumpreneur Feature – Anne

Mum in Business
It’s been a while since I got round to doing a Mumpreneur feature on the blog so I thought I’d get one posted this morning :O) Anne from is here with us today! Please say hi and make her feel welcome xx
Who are you?
I am Anne McEwan a Dutch National who has lived in the UK for 10 years now! I currently live in Norfolk with my husband Colin who is a secondary science teacher and our three children Ben(6) Ruben (4) and Eleanor (1).
What do you do?
I am a trainer and director at Trageschule UK. A franchise of the Trageschule Dresden a world renowned babywearing consultant school. Babywearing or carrying consultants teach parents how to safely and comfortable carry their children in slings. I am also one of the owners of the Natural Mamas forum, run my own consultancy at Wrap My Baby, take care of the day to day running of Onbag and have just taken over the Dutch Franchise for Trageschule.
When did you establish your business?
I first became self-employed in March 2008 when I bought the Rumplebums shop and forum. The forum became Natural Mamas in December 2008 and I started the Trageschule Franchise in March 2010
What made you start your own business?
Pure chance. I had dreamt of starting my own business but was unsure what to do or where to start. Taking over a ready made business and growing it in a new direction was the right way for me to start. All other projects came from this one starting point. I sold the shop in 2010 as I felt there was a conflict of interest but appear to be good at acquiring extra things to do
What do you love about working for yourself?
I love that I get to make all the decisions about my day. If I want to take the day off and sit on the floor playing zoo then I can.
Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
I need to make all the decisions about my day. One of my first jobs was at a well known burger chain. If I was not in for the day the burgers would still be sold. Now if I take the day off the work just piles up until I am back.
Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
I would take more time to make decisions. I guess that is something that still applies to me today though as I am very impulsive and impatient. I work in partnership with some wonderful women who keep me grounded and slow me down now though so that works for me.
What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Ask yourself what would be the worst thing that could happen. If that is something that you can live with go for it. It is the best decision I have ever made!
