Good morning everyone; today we have another lovely mum in business on the blog. Please welcome Lisa from what2buy4kids. You can also find Lisa on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram so make sure you pop over and say hi. Lisa is very kindly giving away a Make your own Chocolate House kit so make sure you read right to the end to see how you can win! 🙂
Who are you?
Hi – I’m Lisa, wife to Jeremy and mum to 3 kids. Chris is my eldest, Emma came along two years later and Katie is the baby of the family. I live in a small village, called Appleton, in Cheshire.
What do you do?
I run my own business, what2buy4kids, which is an online toyshop selling good quality toys and gifts for kids from birth to 12 years.
When did you establish your business?
I started my business 7 years ago, from my dining room at home. Last year, my business had grown so much, that we were bulging at the seams. There was stock in almost every corner of the house, so I had no alternative but to move into larger premises with offices and a warehouse attached.
What made you start your own business?
I was so frustrated with how difficult it was to find good quality, educational, and reasonable priced presents for my children to take to birthday parties. I also wanted to do something that I felt passionate about and being an ex-primary school and early years teacher, I wanted to use my expertise and knowledge in this field.
What do you love about working for yourself?
Being able to do what I’m passionate about is one of the best things about working for myself. I love using my teaching expertise to find new educational toys and gifts for children, that are fun and exciting. I also enjoy being able to share my ethos, creating a business where customer service is at the forefront of everything we do.
Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?
I’m a workaholic and find it very difficult to switch off completely, as I look after and nurture my business like I would a new baby. I’m constantly available 24/7, always checking emails and I’m always at the end of the phone.
Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
No, not really to be honest with you. From the outset, I was having fun, taking on new challenges each day. Looking back, I probably did make mistakes, but I strongly believe that’s one of the best ways to learn. In the beginning, I would dream of having a team of people helping me, but because I didn’t have this luxury, I had to do just about everything myself, from buying stock and fulfilling the orders to designing and developing my website. Having to do everything myself, has meant that I now understand all areas of my business, and I’m confident that I never ask any of my team to do something that I wouldn’t be happy to do myself.
What advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
My top tips for mums who are considering starting their own business, are “To do something you enjoy and are passionate about – then it really won’t ever seem like you are actually working!!! Lead by example, believe in yourself and convince yourself that you will succeed. Also try to challenge yourself each day by taking on something new and exciting.”
As I said at the beginning Lisa is very kindly giving away this Make your own Chocolate House kit to one of my very lucky readers. All you need to do to enter is complete the Rafflecopter below. The winner will be notified by email on the 28th August 2017. Good luck x
