Garmin vívofit jr. Review

A few weeks ago Bugs was sent a Garmin vívofit jr. to try out, over the past few weeks he has been giving it a really good testing. He has really put it through its paces! It has been on his wrist constantly and has been swimming, bike riding, scooting, running, every where that he has been the vívofit jr. has been too!

The vívofit jr. is an activity tracker which encourages kids to stay on the move. The stylish, kid-friendly design is comfortable, durable, swim friendly and features one-year battery life for 24/7 wearability.

The band is an ultra stretch band which fits ages from 4 years to 9 years and is incredibly comfortable to wear. The band is also interchangeable so if you wish to purchase a new one in a different design then you can easily do so.

As well as displaying details of steps and activity minutes on the watch the vívofit jr. works with an app which is where all the details can be found. Each day the wearer is encouraged to complete 60 minutes activity time for which they are rewarded with a goal complete notification on their tracker. This then allows them to move along their activity trail inside the app…

Every time they complete their 60 minute goal they can click on their ‘Let’s Move’ button inside the app this allows them to move one space up on their adventure trail. Every time they move a space up their trail they reveal a clue about a different animal. The first animal is revealed after one complete goal, the second two complete goals and so on all the while encouraging them to reveal their next clue to eventually finding out which animal it is.

The facts and animals are then stored in their adventure journals…

The first animal to be revealed was a Toucan, I won’t tell you any more just incase it spoils it for anyone but so far Bugs has collected another six and I have honestly never seen him so excited to complete his 60 minute goal just so he can get another clue or reveal the animal! It really is a brilliant way to get kids moving!

My favourite feature of the Garmin vívofit jr. is the sleep tracking. It gives you a really good insight into how much sleep your kids are getting. The report above was a bit of a shock for me as I couldn’t understand why Bugs hadn’t gone to sleep until after 11pm on a school night. He’s never been the best sleeper but he is usually asleep by 9:30pm. Well it turns out this particular night he had hidden the iPad under his pillow and was playing it!!  I probably wouldn’t have found out if it wasn’t for his vívofit jr.!! Needless to say he won’t be doing that again!!

This is a better night for him. Asleep before 9pm and a good solid 10 hours. It turns out 10 hours is all he needs, every single night he sleeps for just over 10 hours and has at least 4 hours deep sleep. After worrying about him for quite some time I am now totally reassured that he gets enough sleep since starting to use the vívofit jr.

Another feature of the vívofit jr. that we haven’t used that much is the chores and rewards feature. You can set daily chores for the kids to complete, every time they complete one they earn a coin and then you can set rewards for a certain amount of coins. I really love this idea but because we have a points and pocket money system already well in place at home we haven’t yet started to use this.

Another feature Bugs loves is the task timers  (2, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 30 minutes). He loves to just set the two minute one to clean his teeth and I will often find notifications on my phone to say he has set yet another timer! That reminds me I need to turn notifications off for that as it gets a bit annoying 😉

He also likes the fact that the time display has his name on and that you can change the icon on the steps display… you can choose from a butterfly, friendly T-rex, scary T-rex, elephant, owl or a shark.

We really love the vívofit jr. and would happily recommend it to you. I love the fact their are no chargers or cables needed for the vívofit jr. It is powered by a single coin cell battery that should last for around one year. So there is absolutely no hassle with need for chargers etc.

The vívofit jr. band is designed for ages four to nine and is available in black, broken lava, digi camo, purple strike and real flower band patterns for £79.99. You can also replace the band if you fancy a new look and these are available from £15.99.

* Bugs received his vívofit jr. free of charge for the purpose of this review.

Sounds like a great way to encourage the children to be more active. Even better if they have one each then they can compete against each other.
