#Blogtober18 Day 10 – Just Be Yourself #WorldMentalHealthDay

During October I am taking part in #Blogtober18, where I write a blog post everyday for the whole month. Mandi over at Big Family Organised Chaos is hosting a linky each day where she also gives a prompt for us to write about. Today’s prompt is ‘just be yourself’ for #WorldMentalHealthDay.

At the grand old age of 41 I have finally realised I am OK. Just being myself is perfectly fine. I’ve hated myself and struggled with my mental health for most of my life but nowadays I am really very aware of my feelings, moods etc and I do my very best to take care of myself. I have always been so hard on myself for not looking how I wanted, for not weighing what I wanted, for not matching up to other people, for not being perfect… This is such a huge weight to carry and it has broken me at many different points in my life but finally I think I’m OK just being myself.

Nowadays I just spend time worrying about my kids and their mental health. My oldest has suffered from depression for all of this teenage life and he’s now almost 22 and I worry about him so much. I try to be there as much as I can for him. He has a very supportive family so I hope that pulls him through.

I see signs of depression, anxiety, self-doubt in my younger two all the time too and I worry so much about them growing up in this world where everything seems to be about how many followers you have, how many likes you get on your instagram photos.

Especially for #WorldMentalHealthDay I’ve reached out to some wonderful bloggers and asked them for some tips for taking care of yourself…

I have a notebook that I vent into when I’m feeling particularly angry/anxious/upset. I don’t write in it daily, only when I feel the real need to get something off my chest. It also happens to have a big sparkly unicorn on the front which usually cheers me up 🙂 – Lukeosaurus and Me.

We make sure that we get out of the house every day. A walk in the fresh air does us the world of good. We are huge advocates of exercise. It really does make a massive difference!  – The Places We Will Go.

Don’t be afraid to have a day off and use that day to just do whatever makes you feel ok. Play a game, watch some TV, have a bath – just whatever you can to make things seem better in that moment. – Actual Ar.

Keep talking and talking about how you feel don’t bottle it all up inside. As mums, we can lose sight of our friends a bit but NO! make time for these precious relationships – keep checking in, we all need to to be in contact with people who care about us. – A Beautiful Space.

Square breathing is a great way to relax and slow down the anxiety you feel when you have a stressful day. Grab yourself something square or rectangular and using your eyes as a guide, breathe in slowly from point 1 to point 2, exhale slowly from the 2nd to the 3rd point, inhale from the 3rd to the 4th and so on until you find your breathing slowing down. It works, plus it also helps you to sleep!  – Motherhood Diaries.

Find a hobby that is just for you. Time away from everything that stresses you and means you get out of the house every week. I have recently joined a choir and love it. I haven’t been in a choir since school and music just makes me so happy. I am socialising with new people and I get to leave all my worries back at home. – Emma Reed.

My tip would be take a little bit of time each week to be selfish and just think about you and your needs, even if it’s just half an hour. It sounds so simple but as busy parents how often do we really think about ourselves? – My Mummy’s Pennies.

Whatever you are doing today just know that you are special, you are loved and you are worth it! Take care of yourself and give yourself a break.

    It’s only over the last couple of years that I have accepted who I am and I’m happy with me.

    Great input from lots of people here, sad that so many of us suffer with mental illness.

    Isn’t it a shame that we can take so long to actually like ourselves just as we are. I think those that are happiest in life are the ones who are happy with themselves and by encouraging our children to be happy as they are is the best gift we can give them.
    Some fabulous tips there too, bloggers are good at this stuff 😉
