What do you do?
I am the Geek Fairy and I fiddle with WordPress

I design new websites and do blog make over and everything that goes along with that.  I design social media icons too, that people can download for free on my site.

When did you establish your business?

What made you start your own business?
I had been playing with WordPress from having my own blog. I have always had a real interest in how things work with computers, never accepting defeat of not being able to change a colour or look of a WordPress site. I was spending more time helping friends out with their blogs as favours and kept being told I should start doing it and be paid.

A year before I started my own cleaning business, and was fully booked with that, but it was hard work and not that flexible.  I still clean 7 hours a week alongside the geek stuff.

What do you love about working for yourself?
I love WordPress and learning, and doing what I do I am constantly learning new tricks and ways to change things.  Every theme is different, so you are teaching yourself how to change it with each client.

Changing a blog or website from something that a client hates to something they love is brilliant too.  I realise that for many people WordPress, websites and blog are terrifying places, and I really enjoy trying to break thins down, I put tutorials on my site too.

I also love that fact I am really affordable, I have heard so many horror stories of people paying £1000’s for a website that is often rubbish and not suiting their needs.  It is great to be able to give people value for money.

Is there anything you do not like about working for yourself?

The fact nothing is guaranteed, no nice wage packet at the end of the month. The no sick pay and holidays would also get your down if you let it. But I just appreciate the positives, the fact that I get paid to do something I really love and get a thrill from.

Is there anything you would go back and do differently if you could?
Have more faith in myself – I still struggle with this!

The White Approach squareWhat advice would you give to a Mum considering starting her own business?
Keep good accounts from day 1, and update them every month (not every year!)

Give something away free, like my social media icons on the site. They are doing well on Google searches, getting people to the site and I have my first (Australian!) client from them.

To enter to win a set of social media buttons for your website/blog designed just for you by Jo complete the Rafflecopter steps below :)
